One of the most popular hill stations in the state of Kerala, Munnar is perhaps one of the most visited hill station by many from the nearby city of Cochin. The distance from Cochin to Munnar is around 130 km by road which is very frequently traversed by local tourists. This popular honeymoon destination is a favourite among many urban couples for its rolling hills and lush greenery all around. The entire region is under a thick carpet of lush green tea plantations that adds to the beauty of this hill station. With a spectacular view of the rolling green hills and winding roads and the mystical blue sky above, Munnar is truly paradise for nature lovers. Situated in the Idukki district of Kerala, Munnar has varying topography consisting of tumbling waterfalls, gentle streams, tea plantations, grasslands, Shola forests, plains and emerald lakes that attract tourists from all across the country. The high hills surrounding the region are densely covered in lush greenery while the valleys are covered in rich spices plantations. Teak, red sandalwood, rosewood and jungle jack are the main vegetation of the region and these are abundant in exotic birds some of which are rare and are even considered endangered. One of the most popular treks is to the Anamudi Peak, the highest in South India. This peak is also the highest point in South India apart from the Himalaya-Karakoram mountain range. Among the other interesting attractions in Munnar are the Kurinjimala Sanctuary and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary that are the hot favourites among nature lovers. Munnar is well connected to Cochin by means of road and rail. The journey by road takes approximately 3 hours and passes through the towns of Tripunithura, Kolencherry, Ayyankavu, Oonnukal, Adimaly and Munnar. The route is dotted with many petrol bunks with their adjoining fast food joints that provide a good opportunity to stretch those tired limbs and to refuel both the vehicle and one's appetite as well. Taxis can be hired to go from Cochin to Munnar that charge around INR 15 to INR 30 per km with the rates varying on the type of vehicle chosen. State run and privately run buses also ply between this route and usually takes close to 6 hours to reach Munnar owing to the multiple stops in between. Ooty, the Queen of Hill Stations is accessible from all parts of South India through all modes of transportations like air, rail and road. Tourists crowd from all parts of India in Ooty for its climate and scenic beauty. It is a favorite hill station of the South Indians due to its proximity. Ooty is located at a distance of about 537 km away from the capital city of Tamilnadu, Chennai. Chennai is well-connected to this Queen of Hill Stations through all modes of transportation, rail, road and air. Coimbatore international airport is the nearest airport to Ooty. It is located at a distance ofabout 98 km away from Ooty and the hill station can be reached after a travel time of approximately one hour in any of the taxis, cabs and buses available from the airport premises.Direct flights are available from Chennai to Coimbatore. The travel time from Chennai to Coimbatore is from one to one and half hours and the travel charges range from 2500 to 3000 rupees per traveler depending upon the availability of flights. Thereare no direct trains to reach Ooty from Chennai. Trains are available from Chennai to Mettupalayam, the nearest railway station to Ooty. Travel from Chennai to Mettupalayam in train will take 9 hours. Mettupalayam railway station is located at a distance of about 52 km away from Ooty. Some of the important places covered during the journey from Chennai to Ooty are Vellur at a distance of 136 km away from Chennai, Krishnagiri at a distance of121 km away from Vellur, Mettur which is at a distance of 117 km away from Krishnagiri and Ooty at about 176 km away from Krishnagiri. Lot of private cabs and taxis are available from Chennai to Ooty. The approximate charges of these cabs range from 15 rupees to 45 rupees per kilometer depending upon the type of vehicle chosen by the traveler. A lot of direct bus services are available from Chennai to Ooty. The travel time from Chennai to Ooty in bus is approximately 10 hours. Ooty bus station is situated at the heart of the city. Though flight services to Coimbatore from Chennai are expensive, travelling by fight to Ooty is the best suited for senior citizens and those with less time. Travelling by car is best suited for group travelers and families with kids since the travel can be organized accordingly. Chennai, which was previously referred to as Madras or Madarasapatinam, is the capital town of the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It located on the Coromandel Coast, along the Bay of Bengal at the eastern coast of the country. Chennai is also the nerve centre of Carnatic music, and conjointly incorporates a spirited theatre backdrop. It is equally famous for Bharata Natyam (the traditional dance style of Tamil Nadu) schools, and other educational institutions and academies. The Tamil film business, which is touted to be the second largest film business in India, is also based in Chennai. Mahabalipuram is an ancient port city situated on the Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu. Also known as Mamallapuram, the city of Mahabalipuram is believed to have been built by the Pallava Dynasty in the 7th century. One of the most famous and most visited destinations of Tamil Nadu, Mahabalipuram is approximately 58 kilometers away from the capital city of Chennai. Mahabalipuram is a well-known paradigm of Dravidian style architectures and monuments. Mahabalipuram is located in close proximity to Chennai and is easily accessible by road. This ancient city has no railway station and Chengalpattu (CGL) lying at a distance of 31 km from Mahabalipuram is the nearest train station, which is directly connected to Chennai. On reaching Chengalpattu, one can hire a taxi from the station to reach Mahabalipuram. Alternatively one can also board the buses from here. Mahabalipuram is well-connected and easily accessible from other parts of the state, especially from the capital city of Tamil Nadu, Chennai. Many private and government operated bus services are available to travel from Chennai to Mahabalipuram. Tourist taxis can also be hired to reach Mahabalipuram from Chennai. Buses, two-wheelers on rent and taxis are the common means of intra-city travel. Mahabalipuram is also well connected with Chennai by daily bus services. These services, which are run by both government and private operators, are the most popular and common means of travel from Chennai to Mahabalipuram. An ordinary bus plying along this route will cost up to Rs 100 per ticket. Moreover, there are many other types of buses like A/C, non A/C Volvo, air bus and others that offer comfortable journey to the place. Since the time taken for the journey is fairly less, even elderly and families with small kids can also opt to travel by bus. An alternative mode of travel is to hire a taxi from Chennai to Mahabalipuram. It will cost a traveller around Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 for a round trip. This is highly recommended while travelling with infants, elders and invalids. Ooty is a hill station situated in the Nilgiri district of Tamilnadu which is popularly known as the Queen of Hill Stations. Ooty is the favorite hill station of Indian tourists especially those from the neighboring states of Kerala and Karnataka due to its proximity. Ooty is easily accessible from the state capital of Karnataka, Bangalore. Located at a distance of about 276 km away from Bangalore, Ooty can be reached by all modes of transport viz. rail, road and air, from Bangalore. The best mode of transportation from Bangalore to Ooty is via road that takes about 6 hours of travel time. The places covered in the travel between Bangalore and Ooty include Boler at 33 km away from Bangalore, Bannur at 95 km from there, Mysore at 26 km from Bannur, Najangudu which is 24 km far from Mysore, Begur at 22 km away from Najagundu, Gundalpet which is15 km away from Begur, Theppakkadu 32 km away from there and Ooty at 35 km away from Theppakkadu. Private taxis are available from Bangalore to Ooty that charges from 15 to 45 rupees per kilometer depending upon the type of vehicle chosen by the traveler. A number of direct buses, both private and buses run by the State Road Transport Corporation of Karnataka are available to reach Ooty from Bangalore. These buses include luxury AC coaches to Volvo buses. The Ooty bus station is situated at the heart of the city center. There is no direct train service from Bangalore to Ooty. After reaching the Mettupalayam railway station which is at a distance of 189 km away from Ooty, which will take 7 hours of travel from Bangalore, one will have to catch the Toy Train provided by the Nilgiri Mountain Railway to reach the Udhagamandalam Railway Station. The Toy Train takes about 2 hours of travel to reach Ooty railway station which is at the heart of the city center. One who wishes to reach Ooty from Bangalore through flight will have to get down at Coimbatore International Airport which is at a distance of 98 km away from Ooty. Travel by flight will take an hour and from the airport taxis and buses are available to reach Ooty. Traveling by road in car from Bangalore to Ooty is the most economical and comfortable mode of transportation between the two places. This is best suited for families with kids, elders and for group travelers. Bus journey is ideal for youngsters, backpackers and individual travelers. Train journey, though needs an interchange between Mettupalayam and Ooty is suited for the elderly and those with travel sickness. Among all these options, the best is by road which takes about 8 hours and goes through the following major towns like Hosur, Krishnagiri, Gundalapatti, Salem, Thadikombu and Kodaikanal. The route is excellent and has many eateries along the way. Driving to Kodaikanal is another excellent option and gives one more flexibility in terms of the time allotted for food stops. Hire a cab in case the long drive doesn't seem too appealing. Cabs charge anywhere between INR 15 to 25 depending upon the type of vehicle chosen. Madurai is the closest airport to Kodaikanal, which is situated about 126 km away and takes about two and a half hours to reach.
