Nasik, a religious city in Maharashtra, is situated at the foothills of Western Ghats on the bank of Godavari River. According to legends, Lord Rama along with his brother Lakshmana and wife Sita had spent 14 years of their exile at Tapovan near here. At this very place, it is believed, Lakshmana had slashed off the nose of Surpanakha. The place is, therefore, called Nasik which meant nose. Nasik area was widely referred in Ramayana which included Sita Gumpha caves in Panchvati. Nasik is considered as one of the holy Hindu pilgrim cities. The city organises Kumbh Mela, which is held in every 12 years. Trimbakeshwar, few kilometres from city, has one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples. There are several places in Nasik which are associated with Lord Rama. Panchvati, where Lord Rama spent some time in exile, is situated on the banks of Godavari River. It is marked by five banyan trees. Another place is Ramkund where Lord Ram used to bathe. Other places of tourist attraction are Kelaram Temple and Mukti Dham Temple. There are inscriptions of Bhagvad Gita in Mukti Dham Temple. The distance from Nasik to Shirdi, known as the 'Land of Sai', is about 112 km. Nasik has an airport which has connectivity with Mumbai. There is a railway station in Shirdi (Sainagar Shirdi), which is situated at a distance of 10 km from town centre. Kopergaon station, situated on the Manmad-Daund line, is 16 km away from the temple town. Manmad station is 58 km away. However, to reach Shirdi from Nasik by rail is cumbersome. Most convenient way to travel from Nasik to Shirdi is by road. State Transport and private buses run on this route at regular intervals. Shirdi can be reached from Nasik in less than three hours. Taxi services are available and the journey costs about Rs.2300. Shirdi, known for great saint Shirdi Sai Baba, is a popular destination of pilgrims throughout the year. Sai Baba, who was born in 1838, first visited the place when he was sixteen and stayed there until his death in 1918. A temple, spread over an area of 200 sq metres, was constructed in Shirdi in 1922 in Baba's memory. An estimated 25000 pilgrims visit the temple daily. Temple complex includes Khandoba, Gurusthan, Samadhi Mandir, Dwarkamai, Chavadi and Lendi Baug. Maruti Temple and Shani Temple, constructed under the supervision of Shirdi Sai Baba, are the other places of attraction in Shirdi. Samadhi of Abdul Baba contains the mortal remains of the man who used to read Quran to Sai Baba. Shirdi, which is a small town spread over an area of 3 sq km, shot into fame only during 20th century. Mumbai, which was earlier known as 'Bom Baia' and Bombay, has a long and diverse history. It was under the rule of many dynasties. Portuguese occupied Mumbai in 1534 and it later came under the British rule. It took a quantum leap towards modernization when the first train in India ran between Bombay Victoria Terminus and Thane in 1853. Mumbai is now the commercial capital of India. Mumbai houses several heritage sites, particularly the Gateway of India. Other important sites Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Vasai Fort, Flora Fountain, Essel World, Water Kingdom, Prince of Wales Museum, Nehru Planetarium , Jehangir Art Gallery, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai Zoo, Taraporewala Aquarium, Chowpatty Beach, Juhu Beach, Vihar Lake, Hanging Gardens, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Nariman Point, Marine Drive ('Queen's Necklace'), Mahalaxmi Temple, Iskcon Temple, Siddhivinayak Temple, Haji Ali Mosque, Film City, Kanheri Caves, Jogeshwari Caves, Mahalaxmi Race Course and Elephanta Island. The distance from Mumbai to Shirdi, known as the 'Land of Sai', is approximately 296 km. The nearest airport is at Nasik situated at a distance of 75 km from Shirdi. Nasik airport has connectivity with Mumbai. There is a railway station in Shirdi (Sainagar Shirdi), which is situated at a distance of 10 km from the town centre. Most convenient train from Mumbai to Shirdi is Shirdi Express (51033) which reaches there at 10.30 a.m. Running time of the train is about 12 hours. Alternately travellers can catch a train from Mumbai to Manmad, which is 58 km from Shirdi, and from there take a bus or hire a taxi to Shirdi. There are several trains running between Mumbai and Manmad. Buses and taxis ply from Manmad railway station to Shirdi. Shirdi can be reached by State Transport and private buses, a/c, non-a/c and deluxe, from Mumbai. Taxis are available from Mumbai to Shirdi which will cost about Rs.6000. Situated in the state of Tamil Nadu, Ooty is often referred as 'Queen of Hill Stations' by the British. Located on the Nilgiri Hills, Ooty is a favourite hill station for honeymooners and other casual tourists. The official name of Ooty was Udhagamandalam. The origin of the name Udhagamandalam is derived from othakal-mund which means the ‘House in Mountains' in Toda language. The British changed the name Udhagamandalam to Ootacamund and later to Ooty. Ooty, the former capital of the Nilgiri district, offers serene surroundings, nice and foggy weather and the toy train journey. Perched at an altitude of 2286 m, the city of Ooty is home to various flowers and trees. A famous Kurinji flower, blue in colour, blossoms once in twelve years here. The Botanical Garden of Ooty, established in 1847, is a very important place to visit for the tourists as well as for the students. One of the important events in the botanical garden of Ooty is the flower and fruit show that organized annually by the tourism department. The mountain train journey (Toy train) from Kallar on a ratchet is very breath taking as well as interesting. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is one of the oldest railways in the country and it can find a place in the UNESCO World Heritage site. Many part of the forest in Ooty is preserved as reserve forest. Coonoor and Kotagiri are some other hill resorts nearby that attract many visitors. Coimbatore or Kovai, an industrial city, is situated in the state of Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore is famous for automobile spare parts manufacturing industries and textile industries. The city is home to various educational institutions and health care centers. The main attractions in Coimbatore are the religious centers like temples and churches. Apart from these, Kovai offers several amusement parks and botanical gardens. The best time to visit the city is from September to March. Ooty does not have an airport or railway station. The only option left to travel to Ooty from Coimbatore is by road. The nearest railway station to Ooty is Mettupalayam from where one can get toy train to reach Ooty. Frequent trains are available from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam. Nilagiri Express passes daily through Mettupalayam from Coimbatore. You can take a bus from Coimbatore to Ooty which is comfortable too. To Ooty, one can get bus from the new Coimbatore bus stand through Mettupalayam within 3 and half hours. Cabs charge Rs. 2200/- for 4 travellers. For more than 4 tourists, the cost of the cab increases to Rs. 3000/-. Bangalore or Bengaluru, as it is known today, is the capital city of the southern state of Karnataka in India. Renowned as the Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore is located on the Deccan Plateau, in the southeastern part of Karnataka. Bangalore was known as the Garden City of India from the 1950s owing to the beautiful gardens that dotted the city. But at present, this metropolis is more or less known for its numerous IT based companies and tech parks. As Bangalore enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year, many people settled here, thereby earning it another sobriquet - the Pensioner's Paradise. Kodaikanal is a famous hill station located in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. Kodaikanal means 'The Gift of the Forest' in the local dialect Tamil. Kodaikanal is also called the ‘Princess of Hill Stations' as it was a popular summer retreat right from the days of the British. Kodaikanal was established as a shelter from the heat and diseases of the plains by the British in the year 1845. Presently, Kodaikanal thrives on the tourism industry and offers a plethora of attractions which include waterfalls, valleys, view points, meadows, caves and unspoiled natural beauty. Travelling from Bangalore to Kodaikanal is moderately simple. Though both the cities aren't directly connected by air transport, proximity of Kodaikanal to Madurai (126 km) and Coimbatore (180km) airports makes the travel easy. There are direct flights from Bangalore to Coimbatore and Bangalore to Madurai. Each of these airports offers passenger amenities like restaurants and pre-paid taxi service. Taxis to Kodaikanal charge upwards of INR 4,000. Travel time from Coimbatore to Kodaikanal by cab is around five hrs amidst picturesque settings. Time taken to achieve Kodaikanal from Madurai by automotive is around 3 and half hours. Rail connectivity from Bangalore to Kodaikanal is also good. Two trains, Nagarcoil Express and Tuticorn Express connect Bangalore to Kodaikanal (Kodai Road station). The train takes approximately ten hours time to arrive from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. Advance booking of train tickets is suggested if travelling with elders and youngsters, particularly during the peak seasons – which are from April to June and September to October. Traveling from Bangalore to Kodaikanal by road is less complicated as there are several buses that ply from Bangalore. Private agencies and government agencies, both run different types of buses like airbus, AC luxury seater, AC sleeper, Semi sleeper, 2 X 2 coaches. They charge around INR 340 to INR 514, according to the facilities provided. Hiring taxi is another option to travel from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. The beautiful hill station of Ooty or Ootacamund is one of the most popular hill stations in India and often visited by a number of tourists from Bangalore for whom it is the ideal weekend destination. Ooty is perched at an altitude of 2286 m nestled amidst the beautiful Nilgiri Hills. Ooty is fringed by mighty mountains peaks and is also the site of the highest point in Southern India, the Doddabetta Peak. This mountain peak is a favourite adventure site for many adventure seekers who come from Bangalore to Ooty to indulge in some adventure tourism. The landscape of Ooty is beautified by its carpet of plush green tea plantations, cascading waterfalls and a wide variety of flora. Apart from tea plantations, Ooty is also famous for its spice gardens which grow a variety of spices. The region is also famous for its oil extraction from eucalyptus tree, plants like lemongrass and geranium. One of the highlights of Ooty, apart from its spectacular scenery is the Toy Train ride along a very scenic route. This narrow gauge train traverses through a 46 km long route climbing up and down several hills and offers tourists a breathtaking view from every angle of the entire journey. The journey commences at a small station near Mettupalayam called Kallar and takes quite a long time to reach its destination since the steam engine needs to be frequently replenished with water. Among the many popular tourist attractions in Ooty, most noted ones are Ooty Lake, Deer Park, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, the Rose Garden, Ooty Botanical Garden and the Stone House. The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, a national park and tiger reserve also draws a large number of tourists to it. The city of Bangalore is situated around 267 km from Ooty by road. a well-laid network of roads and rails, connect the city of Bangalore to Ooty. There is no direct train to Ooty, however those wishing to traverse the distance by road can do so by taking a train from Bangalore to Mettupalayam and then from there Ooty is a toy train ride away. Ooty does not have an airport of its own and the closest airport is in Coimbatore. Travelling to Ooty via flight is not a recommended way to travel as it is not only uneconomical but is also quite a time consuming option. a cab ride from Coimbatore airport to Ooty would set you back by around INR 2500. An excellent mode of transport is by the state run KSRTC bus, which are available in plenty. A number of private buses also operate on this route.
