Way To Get From Nasik To Shirdi By: Rashmiranjan Patil
Nasik, a religious city in Maharashtra, is situated at the foothills of Western Ghats on the bank of Godavari River. It is believed that Lakshmana had slashed off the nose of Surpanakha here and thus the place is called Nasik which means nose.
Shirdi is better known as the place where the popular saint Shirdi Sai Baba lived and is situated in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra state. Popularly called the 'Land of Sai', Shirdi is considered to be a pilgrimage destination for many Sai devotees throughout the year.
Baba Sai's teaching mostly combines the elements of Hinduism and Islam.
The Shirdi temple complex which is the main attraction of Shirdi is spread over an area of about 200 square meters. Maruti Temple and Shani Temple, constructed under the supervision of Shirdi Sai Baba, are the other places of attraction in Shirdi. Maruti Mandir is considered being a favourite place of Sai Baba, who used to conduct satsangs here on a regular basis.
The distance from Nasik to Shirdi is about 112 km.
The best way to travel from Nasik to Shirdi is by road. State Transport and private buses run on this route at regular intervals. Shirdi can be reached from Nasik in less than three hours. The SH 39 that connects Nasik to Shirdi is wide and four-laned. The road has numerous hotels, refreshment stalls and petrol bunks along the way. Taxi services are available and the journey costs about Rs. 2300. If you are keen on taking your own vehicle, the drive from Nasik to Shirdi will not disappoint you.
Shirdi's railway station, the Sainagar Shirdi Railway Station is just 2 km from Shirdi. Few trains from Nasik stop at Sainagar Station. SNSI LTT Special (01060) and Janshatabdi (01038) connect Nasik and Shirdi.
Most of the trains from Nasik stop only at Kopargaon situated on the Manmad-Daund line, 14 km from Shirdi. The daily trains from Nasik to Kopargaon are Goa express (12779), Nasik-Manmad express (51761), Amarvathi express (17905), Azad Hind express (12129), Saigram express (12749) and Nasik SNSI express (14539). From Kopargaon you can catch a bus or hire a cab to Shirdi.
There is a direct train to Shirdi from Kopargaon, the Lokamanya Tilak-Shirdi express that takes 45 minutes.
One can also catch a train from Nasik and get down at Manmad and catch a bus or cab to Shirdi. Nandigram Express (11402), Gorakpur CSTM (0130), Vidarbha Express (12106), Devagiri Express (17058) and Punjab Mail (12138) are the trains that connect Nasik and Manmad. Manmad station is 58 km away from Shirdi and buses and cabs are available.

Ooty is a scenic hill station situated in the Nilgiri mountain ranges of Tamil Nadu. Situated around 127 km from Mysore, this hill station is much frequented by tourists who travel the distance from Mysore to Ooty to escape the hot summers and experience tranquility and serene beauty.
This 'Queen of Hill Stations' is surrounded by lofty mountain ranges, and dotted with many a scenic waterfall and streams and is enshrouded in lush green tea plantations. A favourite among adventurers is a trek to the Doddabetta Peak, which is the highest peak in the region perched at an altitude of 2286 m above sea level.
Ooty was originally inhabited by Todas and few other tribes before it came under the British rule, after which its name changed from Udhagamandalam to Ootacamund and then to its shortened version Ooty. Ooty has numerous sightseeing attractions on offer, of which the most prominent one is a ride on the toy train of the Nilgiri Mountain Railways, which is almost synonymous with Ooty. Stretching from Coonoor to Udhagamandalam, this Nilgiri toy train ride commences at a small station near Mettupalayam called Kallar and passes through a scenic route as it climbs up and down several hills. The toy train moves at a rather slow pace and is an ideal way to explore the beauty of this hill station.
The Government Rose Garden situated on the slopes of the Elk Hill has over 20,000 varieties of roses, which is the largest collection of roses in the country and a major attraction among tourists. Botanical Gardens spread across an area of 22 acres is famous all over the country for its comprehensive collection of exotic and indigenous plants, shrubs, medicinal plants, bonsais and many more and is another one of Ooty's attractions. Ooty Lake is another prominent attraction in the region apart from the Mudumalai National Park.
Mysore to Ooty distance is well connected by roadways and railways. By road, the journey takes around 3 hours and is considered the best option. Some of the major towns covered during the road journey to Ooty are Nanjangud, Gundlupet, Kadasholai and then Ooty. The route is dotted with several popular restaurants that offer good food and a resting place for the tired limbs. Buses from Mysore to Ooty take about 4 hours and is ideal for backpackers. However, families would be more comfortable availing the service of cabs which charge in the range of INR 13 to INR 30 depending upon the type of vehicle. Especially if there are children or seniors involved, cabs provide the required comfort as well as flexibility to make unscheduled stops in between.
