Travel Plans - Kolkata To Chennai By: Rashmiranjan Patil
Situated on the east bank of River Hooghly, Kolkata was the capital of India during the British rule until 1911. It was then known as Calcutta. An administrator of the English East India Company, Job Charnock, was the official founder of the city.
Victoria Memorial, designed by Sir William Emerson, is the most famous landmark and tourist attraction of Kolkata. The city is also home to monuments, science museums and temples that bear the architectural significance. Rabindra Sadan and Nandan are the theatre and music complexes. Among the popular religious places include Kalighat Temple, St. Paul's Cathedral and Nakhoda Mosque. Kolkata has amusement parks like Aquatica and Nicco Park. The other tourist attractions in the city are Kolkata Museum, Children's Museum, Botanical garden and zoo.
The distance from Kolkata to Chennai, state capital of Tamil Nadu, is about 1660 km. It is believed that Chennai or 'Chennaipattinam' got its name from the Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple. The city is famous for its temples and churches. They are considered to be the fine examples of architecture and craftsmanship. Chennai is also famous for its pre-Independence structures like Fort St. George, St. Mary's Church and Madras High Court.
Among the popular tourist sites in Chennai are Santhome Cathedral Basilica, St. Thomas Mount, Thousand Lights Mosque, Parthasarathy Temple, Kaapaleshwar temple, Ashtalakshmi temple, Adeeswar Temple, Theosophical Society, Senate House, Freemasons Hall, National Art Gallery, Guindy Snake Park, Valluvar Kottam, MGR Memorial, Kamaraj Memorial House and Government Museum.
Besides, Chennai is famous for its beautiful beaches. Marina Beach, which is 12 km long, is one of the longest urban beaches in the world. Among the other popular beaches in Chennai are Elliot's Beach and Covelong Beach.
Expectedly, both the metropolitan cities of Kolkata and Chennai have airports. All the major airlines such as Air India, Jet Airways, Indigo and Kingfisher have regular flights from Kolkata to Chennai and back. While many of the flights are direct to Chennai, some others have stopovers at some places. The direct flight takes about three hours.
Chennai is also well connected by train with Kolkata (Howrah). The daily direct trains from Kolkata to Chennai are Howrah-Chennai Coromandal Express (No.12841) and Howrah-Chennai Express (No.12508). Gauhati-Ernakulam/Thiruvananthapuram Express (Nos. 12508, 12510, 12514 and 12516) trains run six days in a week (except on Saturday). The trains take around 26 hours to 28 hours to travel from Kolkata to Chennai.
Only a few travellers venture to travel such a long distance from Kolkota to Chennai by road. Yet some people use shared taxis to travel from Kolkata as often they fail to get conf0i rmed reservations in the trains. Share taxi cabs charge a fare of Rs.2700 to Rs.3500 per person depending on the car they are travelling in.
Similarly from Chennai To Kolkata is also very easy to travel. Kolkata To Pune is another interesting travel for the visitors.(read entire article)(posted on: 2012-10-30)
