Instead, Italy, champions of 2006, also had to participate in the qualification leading up to the finals. Host countries on the other hand qualify automatically for the finals. Of the 204 countries that participated in the world cup qualifiers, 32 nations succeeded in their quest to be a part of the sporting spectacle.
