Diabetics, Curb Your Cravings With Low Cal Sweeteners ! By: For people who are diabetic, use of sugar needn't
For people who are diabetic, use of sugar needn't be outlawed. A diabetic diet should not necessarily be 100% sugar free. However, it is certainly recommended to keep their sugar intake low. It is beneficial to replacing sugar with low calorie sweeteners for those who wish to enjoy certain foods without the risk of increase in blood sugar levels. These sweeteners can also be helpful for people who are overweight and wish to reduce their calorie intake.
Low calorie sweeteners are more commonly known as sugar substitutes, non- nutritive sweeteners or artificial sweeteners. They are used to sweeten food and drinks. A lot of artificial sweeteners and other sugar substitutes are found in a food and drinks that are marketed as "diet" or "sugar-free" foods or beverages including chewing gum, soft drinks, bakery products, candies, fruit juices, ice creams and yogurt. These low-calorie sweeteners are at least 100 times sweeter than regular sugar, hence only a small amount is required when you use these sugar substitutes.
These are some of the most popular low calorie sweeteners for diabetics that do not provide any calories per serving:
• Saccharin - Sold as Sweet n Low, Sweet Twin, Necta Sweet or as Sugar Twin. This sweetener is commonly used for baking, although it has a noticeable aftertaste when it is used in large quantities.
• Aspartame - It is sold as NutraSweet and Equal. It does have a little aftertaste but becomes unstable at high temperatures thus it should not be used for baking or cooking.
• Acesulfame potassium - Normally sold as Sweet One, Sunett or Swiss Sweet. It has less of an aftertaste unlike saccharin and it is more stable when heated unlike aspartame. However, this sweetener is not available in all markets.
• Stevia - Truvia, Sweetleaf and PureVia are brand names of the table-top zero calorie sweeteners. They are also used as an ingredient in a few beverages. You can find Truvia in some products of Coca-Cola and PureVia in some products of PepsiCo. Rebiana is a sweetening ingredient found in the leaves of the plant of stevia
• Sucralose - It is an artificial sweetener made from sugar with certain chemical changes. It is available with the trade name of Splenda. It has the same taste and volume as that of sugar and it is also stable to heat. Using large amounts of Splenda will add calories. Thus it should be used with precision.(read entire article)(posted on: 2014-04-09)
